This route tours Yusai's castle town and traces the history of the castle.

Maizuru's ancient castle town atmosphere is still present in her old-fashioned houses.

This route starts at Nishi-Maizuru Station, stops at Enryu-ji Temple, Keirin-ji Temple and the Tanabe-jo Castle site, and returns to the station. On the way, you will feel the air of a castle town, including not only temples and shrines, but also old-fashoned houses and warehouses alongside the Takano River.

Enryu-ji Temple

Enryu-ji Temple

Enryu-ji Temple rests at the foot of Mt. Atago on the west side of Maizuru. It is said to have been built by Gyoki in the Nara Period. Precious cultural assets such as Jorokubutu, also called Tango Great Buddha, can be found here.

Asashiro Jinja (Shrine)

Asashiro Jinja (shrine), which was established in 673, has watched over the history of Maizuru. During semiannual rites, Shinto music and dancing are dedicated to the god of the shrine. Every four years, Yoshihara no tachifuri (a traditional sword practicing performance) is performed here. Many locals worship this shrine.

Keirin-ji Temple

Keirin-ji Temple

Keirin-ji Temple was founded by Chikuo Yusen in 1401. It is said that the temple was given a picture of Nirvana and a temple bell because it supported Hosokawa Yusai and fought against Ishida Mitsunari. Witness the exotic atmosphere of the precinct's buildings, which were influenced by Chinese culture.

The Main Gate of Meirinkan

The Main Gate of Meirinkan

Meirinkan was originally instituted as a school of Tanabe-han in the 1780s and produced a large number of scholars. It became Meirin Elementary School in 1873. The gate retains its original appearance.

The Ruins of Tanabe-jo Castle (Maizuru Park)

Tanabe-jo Castle is famous as the battlefield where the Lord Hosokawa Yusai fought against a large army of Ishida Mitsunari during the preliminary stages of the Battle of Sekigahara (1600). The ruins were transformed into a park and the gate was restored in 1982 to include a museum which showcases the castle's history.

Tanabe-jo Shiryokan (Tanabe-jo Museum)

The gate was restored in 1982. The museum displays the successive lords of the castle, centering around Hosokawa Yusai, and the history of Tanabe-han (domain). Nishikie (multi-colored ukiyoe print) of the Itoi Library is exhibited in the Shokokan wing of the museum.
